Melegnano Castle, Medieval castle in Melegnano, Italy
Melegnano Castle is a rectangular brick fortress with four square towers at its corners located in the town of Melegnano. The building contains decorated halls on the first floor adorned with frescoes from the mid-16th century.
The castle was built in 1243 by Milan's mayor Cattelano Carbone on the ruins of earlier fortifications. It endured major sieges in the following years, particularly during attacks under Frederick II.
The castle now houses a municipal library and a small museum with documents and objects from the Lombardy region. It serves the community as a central place for learning about the past.
The entrance is guarded by a protective ravelin structure and the castle is surrounded by a deep moat fed by the nearby Lambro river. Allow time during your visit to explore both the exterior fortifications and the decorated rooms inside.
Gian Galeazzo, the last Visconti Duke of Milan, spent his final moments in this castle before his death in 1402. The place bears witness to a pivotal figure in Italian medieval history.
