Construction of the current church structure began in 1633 and continued until 1680, replacing an earlier Norman building that contained a bell tower.
The church interior features Baroque decorations and frescoes depicting the Assumption of Mary, reflecting the religious traditions of the Sicilian community.
The church stands in Piazza Umberto, serving as the main Catholic place of worship within the Diocese of Cefalù in the Palermo metropolitan area.
The pipe organ from 1659 remains the oldest existing musical instrument in the Madonie region, positioned above the entrance portal.
