Monastero di Santa Maria Assunta

The Monastero di Santa Maria Assunta is a large stone complex with a central square cloister and multiple community spaces in Lombardy. Today it functions as a museum, displaying archaeological discoveries and offering thematic routes through different periods.

The monastery was founded in 737 by the noblewoman Manigunda during the Lombard period and served as an administrative center for vast land properties. This early establishment shows the importance of female leadership in the medieval church.

The monastery displays frescoes by Aurelio Luini and Romanesque sculptures that reflect the development of religious art in northern Italy. These works show how medieval artists expressed faith and craftsmanship through decoration.
