Genoa-Saint George viaduct

The Genoa-Saint George viaduct is a highway bridge in northwestern Italy that spans 1067 meters across the Polcevera valley. Eighteen elliptical pillars rise 45 meters to carry the roadway, which measures 30.8 meters in width.

This crossing replaced the Morandi Bridge following its collapse in 2018, with work starting in 2019. The official opening took place on August 3, 2020.

Renzo Piano drew from Genoa's maritime past when choosing materials and finishes for this crossing, with steel parts evoking ship hulls. The color palette mirrors shades found on vessels and docks along the Ligurian coast.

Automated monitoring systems and dehumidification equipment protect the structure from salt-laden condensation. Photovoltaic arrays supply power for lighting and inspection tools.

The beams vary in length up to 50 meters, with each section tailored to the span it crosses. Foundations reach 50 meters below ground to secure the entire structure.
