Torre d'Oglio pontoon bridge

The Torre d'Oglio pontoon bridge connects San Matteo delle Chiaviche and Cesole across the Oglio River using a system of floating platforms that support the roadway. This structure allows vehicles and pedestrians to cross between the municipalities of Viadana and Marcaria in Mantua province.

For nearly 200 years starting in 1750, crossing the river at this location required paid ferry service until the early 1900s. Local municipalities then collaborated to build a permanent pontoon bridge solution to replace the boat-based passage system.

The bridge forms part of the Oglio Sud Natural Park, where residents gather for seasonal riverside activities and traditional community celebrations throughout the year.

The bridge sits on Provincial Road 57 with direct access from both sides of the Oglio River. Visitors should be aware that high water levels or seasonal flooding may occasionally affect crossing conditions.

Recent renovation work has anchored the bridge to its fourth mooring point, departing from its original design that moved with changing river levels. This modification traded flexibility for increased stability to accommodate regular traffic demands.
