Beheading of Saint John the Baptist church, Church in Tione di Trento, Italy
The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist Church, also known as Chiesa Decollazione di San Giovanni Battista, stands alone along a road between Saone and Ponte Arche, surrounded by a large meadow. The facade has three rounded arches, a granite entrance door, and a small brick bell tower with a pyramid-shaped roof.
The first church on this site was built around 1616 in the village of Villa Inferiore, which was later destroyed by a flood. The current building was reconstructed and blessed in 1893 at its present location.
The church sits outside the center of Tione di Trento, along a road between Saone and Ponte Arche, and the open meadow around it makes it easy to spot. As it is an active place of worship, visitors should dress modestly and keep noise to a minimum.
Inside the church, an old fresco that came from a previous church was painted in the Lombard style and shows religious scenes. The polygonal apse also contains a bas-relief panel made of painted majolica, decorated with symbols tied to Saint John the Baptist.
