Saint Leonard church, Medieval church in Unterfennberg, Margreid an der Weinstraße, Italy.

The church of Saint Leonard stands on a small rise near Lake Favogna in Unterfennberg, surrounded by a cemetery. Its gabled facade has a main portal and an oculus set off-centre because of the side aisle added in the 15th century. A square bell tower with a pyramidal spire and two rows of pointed-arch openings adjoins the south wall; inside are two naves, the main one barrel-vaulted and ending in a semicircular apse.

The church's construction date is unknown, but it is placed at the start of the 14th century, perhaps the 13th. Its first documentary mention is in the 1337 will of Henry V of Rottenburg; a 1485 reference may record pilgrim Georg Lenguerrand stopping at "San Leonardo" on the road to Tramin. A side nave was added in the 15th century, the main vault rebuilt in the 17th, and the sacristy enlarged in the 19th. Elevated to a curacy between 1423 and 1444, it passed from the Diocese of Trento to Bolzano-Bressanone in 1964 by decree of Bishop Alessandro Maria Gottardi.

The church is dedicated to Saint Leonard, shown in the altarpiece by Joseph Seeber in Benedictine habit with a tower, a putto offering manacles (his patronage over prisoners) and a shepherd (his patronage over animals). The side altar of Saint Anne holds a 1630-1645 painting of the Education of Mary and a round copy of Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola.

The church stands on a small rise near the Favogna lake, surrounded by a cemetery, in the hamlet of Favogna di Sotto. The main portal and the oculus above it sit off-centre because of the later side aisle. The bell tower with its pyramidal spire rises against the south wall, and the two-storey 19th-century sacristy faces it.

The church is encircled by an iron chain that, according to an old legend, grows by one link every seven years. When it is long enough to wrap around the building three times, the world will end.
