St. Nikolaus in Gfrill, Gothic church in Gfrill, South Tyrol, Italy
St. Nikolaus in Gfrill is a Gothic church featuring a single nave and polygonal choir. The interior is characterized by a pointed arch portal and cross-ribbed vaulting.
The church originated in the 13th century as a simple Romanesque building. Over time, a Gothic choir was added and late Gothic modifications were made in the 16th century.
The southern outer wall displays frescoes from the 14th century showing the Crucifixion scene. Interior walls feature 15th-century paintings of the Last Judgment that shape the sacred space.
The church sits along State Road 38 and connects the regions of Burggrafenamt and Nonsberg. It is easily reachable on foot and serves as a good starting point for exploring the surrounding area.
In the 17th century, Baroque modifications were made, including a flat ceiling and enlarged windows. Later restorations partially reversed these changes.
