Siq

The Siq is a natural sandstone canyon that cuts through the rock face with towering walls on either side creating a dramatic passage. The route winds through narrow sections before opening into Petra's main plaza where carved facades come into view.

The canyon formed through natural erosion over thousands of years but was deliberately enhanced by the Nabataeans as the main entry route to their city. They engineered sophisticated water systems into the rock walls that demonstrate their mastery of desert hydraulics.

Stone carvings and inscriptions along the canyon walls demonstrate the engineering and artistic capabilities of the Nabataean civilization in ancient times.

Walking through the canyon takes about half an hour and can be taxing in midday heat with little shelter available. Bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water to stay comfortable during the walk.

Water channels carved into the canyon walls maintained a continuous water supply to Petra, creating an advanced irrigation system in the desert environment.
