Shimojishima Airport, Commercial airport in Miyakojima, Japan
Shimojishima Airport is a commercial aerodrome on Shimojishima island near Miyakojima, Japan, featuring a 3000-meter runway. This runway is the longest on Japanese islands south of Okinawa and allows operations by larger commercial aircraft.
The airport opened in July 1973 as a private facility initially designed for pilot training and as an alternative landing site for supersonic aircraft. Over the years, it evolved from a training facility into a commercial passenger airport.
The terminal building incorporates architectural elements that echo the building traditions of the Miyakojima and Okinawa regions. This design approach roots the modern structure in local style while maintaining its function as a contemporary transport facility.
Several carriers including Jetstar Japan and Skymark Airlines connect the airport to destinations such as Osaka-Kansai, Tokyo-Narita, Fukuoka, Kobe, and Naha. The long runway allows flexible flight scheduling under different weather conditions for travelers going to and from several Japanese cities.
The facility serves as both a passenger airport and a training center where major Japanese airlines practice landing maneuvers. This dual role means travelers may occasionally see training flights alongside regular passenger operations.
