Kanmon Straits, Strait in Japan
The Kanmon Straits or the Straits of Shimonoseki is the stretch of water separating two of Japan's four main islands.
In 1185, the Battle of Dan-no-ura, which was a major sea battle of the Genpei War, took place in the Kanmon Straits.
Every summer, a large fireworks festival is held in the straits where both Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu compete with each other using fireworks.
The straits can be crossed by ferry, tunnels or the Kanmon Bridge.
The straits are the location of the undersea Kanmon Railway Tunnel and the Kanmon Roadway Tunnel, connecting the islands of Honshu and Kyushu.
