Koshigaya, Commercial city in Saitama Prefecture, Japan
Koshigaya is a commercial city in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, spreading across flat terrain east of the capital. The city combines residential areas with commercial zones and several rivers cross the municipal area from north to south.
During the Edo period the settlement served as a postal station on two major overland routes leading north from the capital. Proximity to Tokyo encouraged growth and gradually transformed the settlement into a regional trade center.
The city sits at the meeting point of several waterways and preserves traditional residential forms in older quarters. Residents use riverside parks for daily walks and gather in commercial districts where modern architecture stands next to smaller shops.
Railway lines run directly into the capital center and connect residential neighborhoods with business districts in under an hour. Pedestrian zones around railway stations offer orientation and gather shops and restaurants in a compact area.
A large shopping complex in the eastern part gathers more than five hundred stores under one roof and draws visitors from across the region. The facility combines retail with entertainment and is often cited as one of the largest shopping destinations in the country.
