Kashima

Kashima is a coastal city in Saga Prefecture that stretches along the Ariake Sea shoreline. The Tara mountain range forms a natural border to the south and shapes the land's geography.

During the Edo period, the region was part of Hizen Province and governed by the Nabeshima clan. This feudal control shaped the area's development until modern administrative reforms took place.

The Yutoku Inari Shrine brings together visitors and locals for traditional ceremonies, especially during the new year when people come to offer prayers and participate in rituals. These gatherings reflect how the shrine remains central to the community's spiritual life and celebrations throughout the year.

Visitors can arrive at Hizen-Kashima Station using rail connections or buses from nearby transport hubs. The main attractions are easily accessible from the station, making navigation straightforward.

Every May the Kashima Gatalympics take place on the mudflats of the Ariake Sea, a sporting event held on soft mud. This unusual festival shows how the community celebrates its coastal heritage in a playful way.
