Iyo, Coastal city in Ehime Prefecture, Japan
Iyo is a city in Ehime Prefecture that stretches between the Seto Inland Sea coastline and mountainous areas inland. The city blends flat coastal zones with forested hills further back from the water.
The city formed in 1955 when Gunchū merged with surrounding villages. The area expanded again in 2005 by taking in Nakayama and Futami.
The Mishima Shrine sits near the water and draws people to climb its hundreds of stone steps for views across the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can observe how locals approach this sacred place and make use of the peaceful setting overlooking the water.
The Yosan railway line and several bus routes make it easy to get around the city. Main roads including National Routes 56 and 378 connect the city to nearby regions.
The city is home to major food makers that produce dried bonito flakes sold across Japan. Local farmers also grow Nakayama chestnuts and mikan oranges in the surrounding areas.
