Yatsushiro is an administrative division in Kumamoto Prefecture along the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea, where traditional neighborhoods sit alongside modern districts. Transport connections run through the entire municipal area and link the different zones together.
Several municipalities joined together in 2005 to form the current administrative unit, including Izumi, Kagami, Sakamoto, Senchō, and Tōyō. This merger changed the administrative structure of the region permanently and created larger connected territories.
