Akitakata, Rural city in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan

Akitakata is a city in north-central Hiroshima Prefecture surrounded by the Chugoku Mountains and flowing rivers. The landscape combines mountainous terrain with river valleys that shape the area's geography.

The city was formed in 2004 through a merger of several towns including Yoshida and surrounding municipalities, leading to the dissolution of Takata District. This consolidation created the modern form of the area today.

The city hosts Kagura performances, an ancient form of Shinto dance and music that expresses local spiritual beliefs. These traditions remain woven into daily life and show how the community honors its roots.

The city has schools and service facilities serving the local population. When exploring, visitors should note that the mountainous landscape shapes how the area is connected and accessed.

The area is known as the birthplace of Mōri Motonari, a notable 16th-century warlord with strong ties to Tajihi-Sarugake Castle. This connection reveals the region's importance during an earlier period.
