Akiruno, Suburban city in western Tokyo, Japan

Akiruno is a city in western Tokyo that extends across the foothills of the Okutama Mountains and is crossed by the Aki and Hirai Rivers. The landscape shifts from settled valleys to forested hills, with residential areas sitting alongside agricultural plots and mountain trails.

The city formed on September 1, 1995, when Akigawa city and Itsukaichi town merged into a single municipality. This consolidation brought together two neighboring areas that had previously been separate administrative units within Tokyo Prefecture.

The name combines the two former municipalities of Akigawa and Itsukaichi, whose identities remain visible in local neighborhoods and communities today. Many residents maintain close ties to the temples and shrines scattered across the city, which become focal points for community life during traditional celebrations.

The JR Itsukaichi Line connects several stations across the city to central Tokyo, providing regular train services for commuters and visitors. Those planning to explore the mountain areas should bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for changing weather, as higher elevations can offer cooler temperatures.

The Hasetsune Cup trail running event takes participants through the mountainous terrain, drawing runners from across Japan each year. This route is considered one of the most demanding of its kind, testing both endurance and skill on steep climbs and narrow forest paths.
