Higashisonogi, Coastal municipality in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan

Higashisonogi is a municipality in Nagasaki Prefecture situated along volcanic hills and coastline on the eastern side of Omura Bay. The landscape blends steep terrain with flatter coastal areas where tea fields and rice paddies define the rural setting.

The area shows evidence of ancient settlement through the Hisagozuka Kofun burial mound dating from the 5th century. The region later fell under Omura Domain control during the Edo period, shaping its development as a fishing and farming community.

The local way of life centers on fishing traditions and tea cultivation, with green tea fields forming a key part of the landscape. These practices remain woven into daily routines and community identity.

The town is served by the Omura Line rail connection operated by JR Kyushu, with stations at Sonogi and Chiwata providing access to the area. Keep in mind that this is a rural location where services and facilities may be limited compared to larger cities.

The area contains the Hisagozuka Kofun, one of the oldest archaeological sites in Nagasaki that visitors often overlook despite its significance for understanding ancient Japanese cultures. This burial site reveals how deeply rooted human settlement in the region is.
