Gero, Hot spring resort city in Gifu Prefecture, Japan
The city extends across 851 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, with the Hida and Maze Rivers flowing through dense forests covering 91 percent of the area.
The village of Gero established in 1889 gained town status in 1925 and merged with neighboring municipalities to become a city in March 2004.
The Gassho Village Open Air Museum displays traditional farmhouses from the Shirakawago region, offering demonstrations of local artisan techniques throughout the year.
Visitors can purchase a Yumeguri Tegata pass for 1300 yen, valid for six months, allowing entry to three different participating ryokan baths in the city.
The Onsenji Temple contains a Buddha figure dedicated to healing, connected to the restoration of hot spring water flow after an earthquake disrupted it.
