Gero

Gero is a hot spring resort city in Gifu Prefecture surrounded by mountainous terrain and dense forests with rivers running through the landscape. The city contains multiple bath facilities fed by natural springs throughout its area.

Gero was established as a village in 1889 and achieved town status in 1925 before merging with neighboring areas to become a city in 2004. This growth reflects its development into an important resort destination.

The Gassho Village Open Air Museum displays traditional farmhouses from the Shirakawago region with regular demonstrations of local artisan techniques. You can observe how people once lived and worked in these historic structures.

The Onsenji Temple houses a Buddha figure associated with the restoration of hot spring water after an earthquake disrupted the flow. This statue holds special meaning for those seeking healing and wellness.
