Hikari, Coastal city in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan
Hikari is a coastal city in Yamaguchi that sits on the alluvial plain of the Shimada River, stretching across roughly 92 square kilometers. The Murozumi Coast and Nijigahama Beach form the natural boundary of the city along the water.
Originally part of Suo Province, the city received its official status on April 1, 1943, when it merged with Murozumi. Additional annexations in later years helped shape the city as it exists today.
The name Hikari means light or brilliance in Japanese, stemming from its role as a coastal port on the Seto Inland Sea. This maritime connection shapes how residents relate to the sea and influences daily life in the city.
The city has a functional harbor and straightforward access to its coastal beaches for visitors. Schools and local services provide basic infrastructure throughout the residential areas.
The former naval arsenal site was converted into industrial facilities now housing steel production and vaccine manufacturing operations. This transformation reflects how the city's economic purpose shifted dramatically after the war.
