Lake Mashū, Volcanic crater lake in Akan-Mashu National Park, Japan

Lake Mashū fills a deep caldera with blue waters reaching 212 meters in depth, surrounded by steep walls rising 350 meters above the surface.

The caldera formation dates back 32,000 years, with the last volcanic activity occurring approximately 2,000 years ago through the emergence of Kamuishu Island.

The Ainu people named this body of water Kintan-kamuy-to, translating to Lake of God in the Mountain, reflecting their spiritual connection to nature.

Visitors can reach the lake through three observation decks accessible by car from Mashu Station, with the west side offering the most extensive views.

The lake contains no visible inlets or outlets, maintaining its water level through underground seepage and rainwater, contributing to its exceptional clarity.
