Kumamoto Airport, Commercial airport in Mashiki, Japan
Kumamoto Airport is a commercial airport in Mashiki and Kikuyo within Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The facility operates a 3,000-meter runway at an elevation of 193 meters and handles domestic as well as international routes to the rest of Japan and East Asia.
The Imperial Japanese Army originally built a military airfield here, which transitioned to civilian use after World War Two. The first passenger terminal opened in 1960 and initially served mostly domestic flights before international connections were added.
The airport takes its name from Kumamoto Prefecture, known for its historic castle and volcanic landscape that shape the region's identity. Local passengers often use the connection for business trips to Tokyo or holiday flights, while visitors begin their exploration of Kyushu here.
The 2023 terminal combines domestic and international departures under one roof, making it straightforward for passengers to navigate after security. The facilities meet enhanced earthquake standards and provide accessible access to all main areas.
During fiscal year 2011, this airport was among only three nationally owned airports in Japan that generated profit. This rare financial performance showed how economically successful operations were managed at the time, which was uncommon for public aviation facilities.
