Enryaku-ji, Buddhist temple in Japan
Enryaku-ji is a Tendai monastery located on Mount Hiei in Ōtsu, overlooking Kyoto.
Founded during the early Heian period in 788, the temple complex was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It serves as the headquarters of the Tendai sect and holds significant influence over Japanese culture.
The temple can be reached by cable car from the base of Mount Hiei.
Enryaku-ji is known for its 'marathon monks' who undertake a seven-year pilgrimage covering over 1,000 days.
