Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, Open-air architectural museum in Koganei Park, Japan
The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is an outdoor display in Koganei Park that presents thirty buildings from different phases of Japanese architecture. The structures stand on a seven-hectare site and can be explored individually.
The museum opened in March 1993 to rescue buildings from the Edo period through the early Shōwa era that could no longer remain at their original sites. Each structure was reassembled at this location to keep its construction methods intact.
The buildings keep their original names and show how people lived, worked, and bathed across different centuries. Visitors can walk through doorways, enter rooms, and see the layout of kitchens, workshops, and living spaces for themselves.
The site opens between 9:30 and 17:30 from April through September, and closes at 16:30 from October to March. The paths are easy to walk and lead through all areas of the grounds.
The Takei Sanshodo building served as the direct model for the boiler room in the animated film Spirited Away. Its interior with wooden shelves and tight spatial layout appears in several scenes throughout the movie.
