Shizuoka Airport, Commercial airport in Makinohara and Shimada, Japan
Shizuoka Airport sits on a plateau between Makinohara and Shimada, with a runway that handles flights within Japan and across Asia. The terminal rests at 132 meters elevation, offering passengers views of surrounding tea plantations and forested hills in the prefecture.
Construction began after the prefectural government secured 190 hectares of land, and the airport opened on June 4, 2009. The location was chosen to provide an alternative air gateway for the busy coastal corridor between Tokyo and Nagoya.
The facility connects travelers to major Japanese destinations including Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa, while offering international routes to Asian cities like Shanghai and Seoul.
The terminal offers parking for vehicles and maintains regular bus links to several train stations, including Kanaya, about six kilometers away. Travelers can also reach the grounds by road from nearby coastal cities in under an hour.
The Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed line runs directly beneath the runway, yet the grounds hold no direct rail connection. Passengers must instead rely on bus services to reach nearby Shinkansen stations.
