Kibichuo, town in Kaga District, Okayama Prefecture, Japan
Kibichuo is a small town in Okayama Prefecture, set among rolling hills and forested land in the Kaga district. Houses are scattered throughout, connected by rice paddies, dirt roads, and forest paths rather than grouped around a single center.
The town was formed in 2004 when two smaller communities, Kamogawa and Kayō, merged into one. Before that, the area was part of Bitchu Province, which was at the heart of the ancient Kibi Kingdom.
The town takes its name from the ancient Kingdom of Kibi, which once shaped this region. Wooden shrines line the paths, showing how locals maintain a connection to tradition and nature in their everyday surroundings.
The town is easiest to reach by car, roughly an hour from Okayama City, as public transport connections are limited. Once there, local taxi services such as Kayo Taxi and Nanba Taxi can help you get around to different spots.
There is a local proposal to relocate Japan's capital to this area, given its reputation for stability against earthquakes. Since 1993, the town has also maintained a sister city relationship with Huai'an District in China, which involves regular exchanges and visits.
