Ikebukuro, Commercial district in Toshima, Japan
Ikebukuro is a major commercial district in Toshima ward in northern Tokyo, built around a large railway hub. The area includes shopping centers, entertainment facilities, office buildings, and residential blocks extending across multiple streets.
The area was farmland until the early 20th century and became an urban center after a railway station opened in 1903. Following World War II, the neighborhood rapidly developed into one of the city's largest transport and commercial hubs.
The eastern side is recognized as a Chinatown, drawing visitors with a range of restaurants and shops focused on Chinese cuisine and goods. The western side hosts many bars and gathering spots that have become part of the local subculture, especially busy after dark.
The area is best explored on foot, as most shops and facilities lie within a short walking distance from the main station. Those who wish to move further into the outskirts will find signage in English and Japanese throughout.
A street called Otome Road focuses on entertainment media for female audiences, offering numerous shops with manga, anime merchandise, and related goods. The district also hosts several themed cafés where guests can meet characters from popular stories.
