Yao Airport, General aviation airport in Yao, Osaka Prefecture, Japan
Yao Airport is a regional airfield in the city of Yao in Osaka Prefecture on the main island of Honshu in Japan. The runways sit at an elevation of 12 meters above sea level and accommodate light aircraft, helicopters, and training flights.
The facility opened in 1938 as a private flight school called Hanshin Aviation School. It was later used as Taishō Airfield during wartime and now continues to serve as a base for emergency response and defense missions.
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Middle Army Aviation Group conducts regular training exercises and operations from this strategic location.
Visitors will find rescue helicopters, private light planes, and military units here, as no scheduled flights are offered. The proximity to Osaka allows easy access without long journeys, though the grounds are mainly open to authorized personnel and registered passengers.
The facility is one of the few Japanese regional airports without commercial scheduled flights and focuses solely on military and private aviation. The grounds were quickly adapted for civilian use after World War II, while military operations have continued to the present day.
