Kaizuka

Kaizuka is a city in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, that stretches along Osaka Bay with mountains rising in the east. The Kogi River runs through the urban area from the hills to the coast, dividing the built landscape into western and eastern sections.

In the 16th century, the area served as a stronghold for Ishiyama Hongan-ji during the Sengoku period. The town received official municipal status in 1889 within Minami District and grew further as industrial port activities expanded.

The name comes from the Japanese word for seashells that were once gathered along the shore. In some workshops, craftspeople still shape and polish combs from boxwood by hand.

The visitor information desk sits directly across from Kaizuka Station on the Nankai Main Line, where bicycles are also available for rental. The city is easy to explore by bicycle since the roads between the river and the coast are mostly flat.

Farmers grow mizunasu eggplant here, a regional variety with a round shape and thin skin. Butterbur also thrives in fields near the river and is harvested for vegetable dishes.
