Esashi, Coastal town in Soya Subprefecture, Japan

Esashi is a coastal town in Soya Subprefecture, Hokkaido, extending along the Sea of Okhotsk with a narrow urban area sandwiched between mountains and the shoreline. Marshlands near the Kitami Horobetsu River characterize the surrounding landscape.

The town was formed in 1909 from the merger of four villages in the region. A major forest fire struck in 1940, bringing significant changes to the settlement's physical landscape.

The name Esashi comes from the Ainu word Esaushi, honoring the indigenous roots of this northern Hokkaido settlement. Walking through town, you notice how this heritage shapes the local identity and connection to the land.

The town is small and manageable, making it easy to explore on foot and get a feel for local life. Its position along the coast and near mountains offers direct access to natural surroundings for visitors interested in outdoor activities.

Winter brings drift ice from the ocean carrying nutrient-rich plankton that feeds the local ecosystem. This seasonal phenomenon supports thriving populations of horsehair crabs, salmon, and scallops in surrounding waters.
