Uasin Gishu County, Administrative county in Rift Valley Region, Kenya.
Uasin Gishu is a county in the Rift Valley that sits on a highland plateau with elevations between 1,500 and 2,700 meters (4,900 to 8,900 feet). The region features educational institutions, including universities, and extensive agricultural lands spread across its terrain.
The name comes from the Maasai word Illwuasin-kishu and the territory was placed under colonial administration through an agreement in 1911. This shift marked a major change in how the area was governed and organized.
The Kalenjin people here have a long history with running and have produced many athletes who compete at the highest levels worldwide. This tradition continues to shape how young people in the region see themselves and their possibilities.
The county has piped water infrastructure serving roughly a third of households and several levels of educational facilities throughout the area. Keep in mind the high elevation when planning a visit, as it affects the climate and how far you can see across the landscape.
The region is a major center for grain production, particularly maize and wheat, with large storage facilities located in the town of Moi's Bridge. This productive capacity plays an important role in feeding Kenya.
