Pailin Province, Province in western Cambodia
Pailin Province sits in western Cambodia near the Thai border, characterized by mountains and numerous waterways crossing the landscape. The terrain consists of rolling hills and forests with rivers and streams flowing throughout the region.
The region began as a hunting ground until settlers discovered precious stones in local streams in the 1800s. This finding transformed the area into an important center for gem trading.
Multiple ethnic groups call this province home, each speaking their own languages and celebrating distinct festivals throughout the year. Walking through different areas reveals how communities maintain separate architectural styles and daily traditions.
Road 5 connects the province directly to Phnom Penh and other regional cities via regular bus services. It helps to arrange local guides when needed, as facilities and services away from main towns are more limited.
The area holds significant deposits of sapphires and rubies that miners continue to extract from streams and soil today. Despite having access to modern techniques, many workers still use traditional panning methods in the rivers.
