Daewonsa, Korean Buddhist temple in Sancheong County, South Korea
Daewonsa is a Buddhist temple located at the eastern base of Jirisan Mountain and operated by nuns. A mountain stream flows through the valley from the parking area to the temple grounds over a distance of 2 kilometers.
The temple was founded in 548 as Pyeongwonsa and underwent multiple reconstructions following fires and damage. Major rebuilding took place in 1685 and 1890.
The temple is run by Buddhist nuns who shape the daily spiritual life of the community through their practice and presence. Visitors can observe how the monastery organizes its rhythm around Buddhist traditions and rituals.
Access is available through intercity buses from Seoul to a nearby station, with local connections continuing to the temple grounds. The valley walk is best done during daylight hours when the path through the stream area is easiest to navigate.
A multi-story stone pagoda houses Buddha relics brought from China and distributed throughout different levels of the structure. This monument is officially recognized as a treasure and reflects the temple's historical connection to China.
