Hantan River Flood Control Dam, dam in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province
The Hantan River Flood Control Dam is a concrete gravity structure that spans across the river and holds back water through its own weight. The dam stands about 83.5 meters (274 feet) tall and stretches nearly 700 meters (2,260 feet) wide, with four spillways that regulate water flow during heavy rainfall.
The dam was conceived as a response to devastating floods in the 1990s that caused over one hundred deaths and displaced thousands of people. Construction started in 2007 and finished in 2015, using roller-compacted concrete methods to build a strong and stable structure.
You can view the structure from nearby roads and bridges, with limited walking paths for visitors in the area. The best time to visit is after heavy rainfall when you can observe the spillways working.
The dam was built using roller-compacted concrete, a special technique that combines efficiency with stability while reducing construction costs. About 27 kilometers of roads had to be relocated to higher ground to make room for the resulting reservoir.
