Amantaka, resort hotel in Luang Prabang, Laos
Amantaka is a resort hotel in the historic center of Luang Prabang, Laos, housed in a former French colonial building. The property has twenty-four suites arranged around a central courtyard, each with a separate living area, a bedroom with a four-poster bed, and a large bathroom.
The building was erected during the French colonial period and served as a hospital before being converted into a hotel. Aman Resorts took on the project around fourteen years ago, keeping the original structure largely intact throughout the renovation.
The name Amantaka combines Sanskrit roots with the local setting of Luang Prabang, pointing to the connection between Buddhist tradition and the hospitality of this region. The grounds mix colonial architecture with Lao design details, mirroring what visitors see throughout the city.
The hotel is within walking distance of the city's main temples and markets, so most of central Luang Prabang is easy to reach on foot. Bicycles are available at the property, and the concierge can arrange tuk-tuks or other transport for destinations a bit further out.
The hotel provides guests with rice to take part in the early-morning monk procession, where Buddhist monks walk through the streets to receive offerings from locals. Staff can also arrange visits to elephant sanctuaries even when regular tour spots are fully booked.
