Gres superieurs Formation, Geological formation in Savannakhet Province, Laos.
The Gres superieurs Formation is a geological layer in Savannakhet Province composed of sandstone, siltstone, and claystone. These deposits spread across the Savannakhet Basin and form an important site for fossils from the Cretaceous period.
This formation dates from the Early Cretaceous period, roughly 120 to 100 million years ago. It preserves fossils of dinosaurs such as Mandschurosaurus laosensis and Tangvayosaurus hoffeti that document earlier life forms of the region.
Geologists and paleontologists from multiple countries conduct research at this formation to study Southeast Asian prehistoric ecosystems and dinosaur evolution.
Visitors need to coordinate with local authorities and universities in Savannakhet to obtain permits and expert guidance. Access is best during drier months when road conditions are more favorable.
A three-dimensionally preserved skull of Lanxangichthys was discovered here, offering rare insights into early aquatic creatures. This find reveals that the region was once populated by diverse aquatic life, not just dinosaurs.
