Vavuniya District

Vavuniya District spans 1,967 square kilometers and contains four Divisional Secretary's Divisions subdivided into 102 Grama Niladhari administrative sectors.

The British administration reorganized the region in 1833, merging the Vanni District with Jaffna and Mannar Districts to establish the Northern Province.

The district population of 171,511 includes Sri Lankan Tamils, Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Moors, and Indian Tamils, with Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam represented.

The district maintains five local authorities, including one Urban Council and four Divisional Councils, to manage administrative and political matters.

Mullaitivu District emerged as a separate entity in September 1978 when authorities divided the northern section of Vavuniya District.
