Gal Oya National Park, National park with vast reservoir in Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.
Gal Oya National Park encompasses 25,900 hectares of land with evergreen forests, grasslands, and the large Senanayake Samudra reservoir containing multiple islands.
The park was established in 1954 to protect the catchment area of Senanayake Samudra reservoir, constructed by damming the Gal Oya river at Inginiyagala in 1950.
The indigenous Vedda people maintain their traditional lifestyle near the park boundaries, sharing their knowledge of the forest through guided walks.
Visitors can explore the park through boat safaris on Senanayake Samudra reservoir or jeep tours along two designated tracks measuring 5 and 13 kilometers.
Elephants regularly swim between the reservoir islands in search of food, creating an opportunity to observe these mammals in their aquatic behavior.
