Dunhinda Falls, Waterfall in Badulla, Sri Lanka.
Dunhinda Falls is a waterfall near Badulla where the Badulu Oya river drops about 64 meters from a steep cliff into a large natural pool. The intense mist forms as the water crashes down and creates spray that rises continuously from the basin below.
The falls is mentioned in history from King Rajasinhe's time, when a giant fern blocked the waterfall and caused floods in the town below. A local hero called Ranhavadidaraya spent three months removing the blockage to restore the water flow.
The name comes from Sinhala, where 'Dun' means mist, describing the spray that rises from where the water hits the pool below.
The walk to the waterfall covers about 1.5 kilometers along a forest path starting from the entrance gate. A secured platform with railings at the end lets you stand safely and see the full view of the falls.
The falls receives water from several rivers, mainly Uma Oya and Hal Oya, which causes the flow to change depending on the season. During dry months the water trickles down, while the rainy season brings a powerful rush.
