Galway's Land National Park, Montane forest national park in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka.
Galway's Land National Park is a montane forest reserve near Nuwara Eliya in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, crossed by a network of marked walking trails. The forest is made up of several vegetation layers at different elevations, forming a dense and varied woodland.
The area was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1938, making it one of the earliest protected forest areas in Sri Lanka's central highlands. It was upgraded to national park status in 2006, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen forest protection in the mountains.
The park draws birdwatchers from around the world who come specifically to spot endemic species that are hard to find elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Early mornings on the trails are quiet but busy with people moving slowly through the trees, binoculars in hand.
The park is open daily and easy to enter through the main gate, with clearly marked trails throughout. Drier months make for more comfortable walking, as the paths can get slippery and overgrown during wetter periods.
Despite being one of the smallest national parks in Sri Lanka, this reserve holds a concentration of endemic bird species that would typically require visiting much larger forest areas to find. That makes it one of the most productive spots for birdwatching relative to its size.
