Kirigalpotta, Mountain summit in Nuwara Eliya District, Sri Lanka.

Kirigalpotta rises to 2,395 meters through dense forests and surrounding tea plantations, making it the second highest peak in Sri Lanka. The mountain passes through different vegetation zones that change as you ascend from lower to higher elevations.

The mountain's name comes from ancient times and refers to traditional cattle grazing and herding practices that occurred in the surrounding hills. This agricultural past shows how people have used these highlands for generations.

The summit holds stories from local communities about ancient ceremonies and spiritual gatherings that once occurred at this location. These traditions reflect the deep cultural connection people have maintained with the mountain over time.

Start early in the morning and bring proper hiking gear to reach the summit before fog rolls in and reduces visibility. Weather changes quickly at this elevation, so bring waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear to handle the muddy and slippery sections.

The mountain forms part of the Central Highlands UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to plants and animals found nowhere else. Visitors often overlook how this specific location plays a role in protecting rare species that exist only in these hills.
