Doovili Ella Falls, Waterfall in Thanjantenna village, Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka
Doovili Ella Falls is a waterfall in Thanjantenna village, Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka, where water tumbles down a sequence of rock formations into a pool at the base. The lower area around the pool is open to visitors, while the upper section of the falls remains off-limits.
Communities in the surrounding area have relied on the waterfall's water and fish for generations, weaving it into local daily life well before it became a visitor site. Its connection to the Walawe River system helped establish it as a key water source for the Ratnapura region.
The name Doovili comes from the Sinhalese word for dust, which refers to the fine mist that rises when the water hits the rocks at the bottom. On sunny days, this spray catches the light and creates a soft haze that hangs over the base of the falls.
The flow is strongest between April and December, when seasonal rains fill the river and the falls run at full force. A parking area is available nearby, and a children's play area makes the site workable for families.
The mist that gives the falls its name is not just a visual effect: it keeps the surrounding rocks wet even on dry days, making footing slippery well away from the water's edge. Visitors often underestimate this and approach the rocks without realizing the surface is as wet as it looks.
