Christ Church Warleigh

Christ Church Warleigh is an Anglican church built from granite stone perched on a clifftop near Dickoya. Its interior features wooden furnishings and original pieces from the 19th century, including an aged pipe organ.

William Scott, manager of the Governor's Mansion, founded this church in 1878 during British colonial rule in Sri Lanka. It was established as a religious center for the European population working in the tea plantation region.

The church serves as a gathering place for the local Anglican community, with regular services held throughout the month. This religious practice connects residents to traditions that developed during the colonial era.

The church sits along the Hatton-Norwood road and welcomes visitors, with a resident caretaker available during the day to assist. It is best to visit during quieter times to properly appreciate the historic features inside.

The churchyard cemetery holds graves of British tea planters from the colonial era, including tombstones of notable figures like Sir George William Robert Campbell. This burial ground preserves the memory of the European community that shaped tea production in the region.
