Randenigala Dam

Randenigala Dam stretches across the Mahaweli River for 485 meters and features three large tainter gate spillways positioned along its southern section. The structure serves both as a power generation facility and helps manage water resources for irrigation purposes in the region.

Construction started in 1982 with financial support from Germany and the facility opened in 1986. The project marked a significant step in developing hydropower as a key energy source for the country.

The dam represents Sri Lanka's commitment to renewable energy development, following the vision of Devapura Jayasena Wimalasurendra, who promoted hydropower projects in the 1920s.

The site sits near Kandy in the central region and is relatively easy to reach via main roads. Visitors should be aware that the area operates actively during wet seasons when water levels can change quickly.

The reservoir collects water from a large drainage basin and supplies benefits beyond power generation to farming areas nearby. This dual purpose for energy and irrigation makes it a multipurpose water project that serves several needs.
