Kandy District, Administrative district in Central Province, Sri Lanka

Kandy District spans mountainous terrain with dense forests, tea plantations, and numerous Buddhist temples distributed throughout the region. The landscape combines natural features with religious structures that dot the area.

The area was the last capital of ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms, which maintained independence from European colonizers until 1815. British control afterward brought major changes to the region's governance and development.

The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy is a place where Buddhist monks regularly perform ceremonies and maintain sacred traditions. Visitors can observe how faith shapes daily practices and the design of these holy spaces.

The district connects to Colombo through multiple routes including the A1 highway and the main railway line from Colombo to Badulla. These connections make reaching the area straightforward and allow exploration of different parts.

The Udawattekele Sanctuary contains over 460 plant species and supports various mammals, reptiles, and birds. This forest area is a surprising natural refuge in the midst of developed surroundings.
