Central Province, Administrative province in Sri Lanka
The Central Province spans across 5,674 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, encompassing three distinct districts: Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya.
The region maintained independence until 1815, when British forces gained control of the Kingdom of Kandy and established colonial administration.
The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, a significant Buddhist shrine within the province, houses a sacred relic of Buddha.
The provincial climate varies with elevation, recording temperatures between 16°C and 28°C, with Nuwara Eliya district experiencing the lowest temperatures.
The province contains Pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in Sri Lanka, reaching 2,524 meters above sea level.
