Central Province

The Central Province is an administrative region in Sri Lanka comprising three districts: Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya. The landscape features mountainous terrain dotted with tea plantations, misty highlands, and lush vegetation that defines much of the region's character.

The region remained independent until 1815, when British forces conquered the Kingdom of Kandy and established colonial governance. This conquest ended centuries of local rule and reshaped the administrative structure of the land.

The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy serves as a major pilgrimage site where you can observe Buddhist devotees making offerings and participating in daily rituals. The temple and its surrounding area form the spiritual heart of the region, where religious traditions remain woven into everyday life.

The region spans varying elevations from lowlands to high mountains, so weather conditions change significantly depending on location and time of day. It is wise to wear layers and prepare for rain, especially in the higher areas where temperatures drop noticeably.

The province is home to Pidurutalagala, the island's highest mountain, which rises prominently above the surrounding landscape. This peak attracts hikers and nature enthusiasts who seek to experience the view from the top and the cool climate found only at such elevation.
