Udawatta Kele Sanctuary

Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a protected forest reserve in Kandy that covers a hillside with dense vegetation and native plant species throughout. The reserve features a network of walking paths that wind through different forest levels and pass by religious structures and a notable cave.

The forest was a private royal garden during the Kandyan Kingdom until the early 19th century, when it transitioned from restricted use. Its official designation as a protected sanctuary came roughly a century later to preserve its natural diversity.

The sanctuary serves as a spiritual center for Buddhist practitioners, with temples and meditation caves woven throughout the forest. Visitors often encounter monks and notice how the forest is maintained as a place for both prayer and reflection.

Wear sturdy footwear as trails can be steep and slippery, particularly after rain. Arriving early in the day gives you better light for walking and helps you avoid crowds.

A massive ancient vine older than 300 years grows deep within the forest and can be discovered by visitors who explore the quieter paths. This plant serves as a living record of the forest's age and ecological stability.
