Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, Protected forest reserve in Kandy, Sri Lanka
The Udawatta Kele Sanctuary spreads across 257 acres of dense forest on a hillside, featuring diverse plant species and numerous walking trails throughout the reserve.
The forest served as a restricted royal garden during the Kandyan Kingdom until 1815, and was officially designated as a sanctuary by the government in 1938.
The forest contains several Buddhist temples, hermitages, and the ancient Senkanda Cave, which influenced the original name of Kandy city, Senkadagala.
Foreign visitors pay 930 rupees for entry, while local adults pay 75 rupees, with the sanctuary operating daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
A massive 300-year-old Entada pusaetha liana grows within the forest, serving as a testament to the sanctuary's long-standing preservation efforts.
