Giragama Walawwa, Historic residence in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Giragama Walawwa is a historic residence located at the intersection of Yatinuwara Veediya and Sir Bennet Soysa Veediya streets, blending traditional Kandyan design with British colonial touches. The building displays the characteristic features of a walawwa, the type of grand residence built during the Kandyan period.
The structure was built in 1814 and served as the residence of Diyawadana Nilame Kudamudiyanse Giragama. British colonial control came to the property in 1815 following their takeover of the region.
The residence was home to the Dunuwila family, whose members managed the Royal Elephant Stables during the Kandyan period. This role made them respected figures in local governance and cultural life.
Visitors can reach the building on foot from Kandy Railway Station by following Yatinuwara Veediya street and looking for signs to the municipal area. The location sits at a busy intersection, so it is easy to spot and accessible from the main roads.
The building's central section contains a wooden tower, an unusual architectural feature. This structure is likely the only one of its kind found in traditional walawwa buildings across Sri Lanka.
