Sembuwatta Lake, body of water
Sembuwatta Lake is a man-made water body in the Elkaduwa tea estate, surrounded by lush hills and pine forests at high elevation. The clear water is fed by a natural spring and also supplies a swimming pool, with trails winding through the scenic landscape around it.
The lake was built in the middle of the 20th century to generate electricity for a tea factory on the estate, though the factory no longer operates. In 2005, the owners began developing the site for visitors, adding guest accommodations and facilities while still using the water for local electricity supply.
The lake is part of the Elkaduwa tea estate and holds significance for the local community as a gathering place. Visitors can observe how the surrounding plantations and natural landscape shape daily life and local traditions in the hill country.
The lake is about one hour by car from Kandy and accessed through forest roads, so travel can be slow but scenic. Visitors should arrive in the morning or late afternoon for the freshest air and should bring water and snacks for walking around the grounds.
The site allows only one group to camp per night, ensuring visitors have the space to themselves. Overnight guests can enjoy barbecues and basic facilities surrounded by forest and hillside views, creating an intimate outdoor experience away from crowds.
